It's Almost Book Fair Time!

After not having in-person book fairs last fall, we elementary and middle school librarians have gained permission to hold fairs in our buildings this month around conferences time. Students and adults already in the buildings will be able to browse--and purchase, if they'd like--books and other goodies from our Scholastic fairs.

Middle school students recently received a fair flyer in Literacy Studies class, and you can access an online version HERE.

Students will be able to shop the book fair during Literacy Studies classes, as well as before and after school. We can accept cash or debit/credit cards, and new this year, we are encouraging families to use Scholastic's eWallet accounts. Families can create eWallet accounts from the MS book fair webpage, and students can then shop the fair using electronically deposited funds. Any money remaining in eWallet accounts at the fair's end will not be refunded. Students received eWallet information along with their book fair fliers.

Like our fall fair, this one is also accessible online, where students and families can access thousands of books and other items. With just a $25 book purchase, items will ship free to your home. You can access the online book fair HERE.

It's Spring Book Fair Time!

Springtime conferences means it's time for our DCG Middle School Book Fair. Again this time, we're using Follett Book Fairs.

Students will have the opportunity to browse the book fair from their Literacy Studies class, and of course, we'd love to have students and their families stop during conferences on Tues. Mar. 12 and Thurs. Mar. 14, 3:00 - 8:00.

Like our Fall Book Fair, we will have a variety of selections related to books students themselves chose, including sports nonfiction, value books, Grades 7 - 9 award winners, and middle grade paperback award winners. 

If you'd like to shop but aren't sure you're able to stop by during the fair, please consider purchasing an online Follett Book Fair gift card you can print from home or access via email. 

The recipient can use the card use during the fair, and with an unused balance, the recipient can shop online. You can access the online gift cards CLICKING HERE.

Featured New Books

With the close of our recent Scholastic Book Fair, you may notice quite a few new titles in the library. Want to try one of them? Here's some information--and book trailers--for some of our new books.

Patina, by Jason Reynolds, is the second book in his Track series that includes the book Ghost. This book follows Patty, one of the teammates on the track team. An African American middle schooler who lives with her aunt and uncle, Patty's life has the life skills to bring her relay team together, to make it in her all-white girls' school, and make the best of her unusual family arrangement. 

Legend series author Marie Lu has a new series in the works with Warcross. Main character Emika is a teenage girl who not only plays the international sensation video game, but also hunts down the people who illegally bet on the game. Check out the trailer:

Want to try historical fiction? Dean Hughes' book Four-Four-Two features the 442nd Combat Regiment from World War II--a unit made up entirely of Japanese Americans.

Main character Yuki and his family are forced to live in a Japanese internment camp in Utah, but Yuki chooses to enlist in the army to serve the country that holds him. He and his friend ship out to Europe, where their friendship only grows stronger amid all the prejudices and battles.

Other titles are read-alikes for books you may have already read. Any of these look familiar?

Conferences are rapidly approaching, so that means it's time for our fall Scholastic Book Fair! Students will be visiting the fair during their reading classes to preview the fair, and it will be open on Tues. Oct. 24 and Thurs. Oct. 26 from 2:30 - 8:00 PM.

Another Round of Booktalks

Seventh graders visited the library today to listen to book talks and to visit the Scholastic Book Fair. Some of the highlights from the Book Fair were Exo, The Shadow Queen, and Zero Day.

Below is the book talk presentation--including mention of this year's Newbery Medal winner The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Also featured is a new-to-us sports series by John Coy called the 4 for 4 Series. 

It's Book Fair Time!

That's right--it's Scholastic Book Fair time again! Students and families can browse and shop the fair from Thurs. Mar. 2 - Thurs. Mar. 9, both during the school day and during parent teacher conferences.

We'll be running a guessing contest during the fair. Students can guess the number of bears in the container, and the student who comes closest to the exact number will win a $10 gift certificate to use at the book fair. Stop by to enter!

Our Online Book Fair is Open!

With conferences approaching, that must mean the Scholastic Book Fair is right around the corner, too! The Fall Book Fair will be in the library from Thurs. Oct. 23 - Fri. Oct. 31.

Eager to shop the fair but don't want to wait until Oct. 23? You can shop our online fair before the books ever arrive at the school! Beginning on Oct. 18, you can browse the Scholastic catalog and make purchases that apply to our Middle School Book Fair.

Thank You for Another Successful Book Fair!

Earlier in the week we wrapped up our second Scholastic Book Fair, and it was a great success! The fiesta theme allowed for all kinds of fun decorating, including our "photo booth." After students made a purchase, they had the opportunity to hit the photo booth!

With the movie release of Veronica Roth's Divergent, it was by far the best-selling item at the Book Fair. The third release in the Lunar Chronicles series, Cress by Marissa Meyer, was a quick mover as well!

Also popular were S.A. Bodeen's The Raft, Jo Knowles' See You at Harry's, and Sarah Beth Durst's Conjured.

It's student conferences time, so that means it's also Book Fair time! This week you'll see the library transform into a reading oasis as we celebrate reading and books. You'll be able to browse and shop the Book Fair each day that it's here from Thurs. Oct. 24 - Fri. Nov. 1.

BOGO Book Fair

It's the final Book Fair of the year, and it's our annual Buy One, Get One Free! Fair. For every item you purchase, you can also get a single item of equal or lesser value free. Also, with our Biographies in Action presentations on Friday, May 3, parents and other guests can browse the fair then. Stop by and check out the titles--get ready for that summer reading! :)

So many winners to announce! The Penny War is officially over, and the unofficial donation total was $296.68! That's AWESOME! The winning advisory was Mrs. Reels' group, so her students will be enjoying free items from the book fair and helping me choose new books for the library.

In a very close race, Pittacus Lore's book I Am Number Four edged out Sharon Draper's Out of My Mind, which tied with Wendelin Van Draanen's book The Running Dream.
